The The Winans Camel was one of the most powerful freight engines of its time. Built to haul long coal trains, the Camel proved so effective that many of the engines survived in service for over 40 years! Ross Winan’s unique design proved well-suited to the twisting routes and tight curves of the early B & O. Reading and Lackawanna railroads. SMR’s new model is what is known as a “medium furnace” version. The B&O model is offered in two configurations, “as delivered” in 1854, with open cab and Winan’s unique smokestack design and the 1870s “modernized” version, with a diamond stack, glass-enclosed cab and headlight.
