In 1878, the Pennsylvania Railroad decided it was time to update their passenger rolling stock.  The earlier class of car dated from the mid-1860s and was considered obsolete.  The design was a radical step forward in concept, the PRR styled them to reflect the movement toward purity of design favored by art critics John Ruskin and Charles Eastlake.  The roof line was simplified and the interior decoration more restrained and elegant.  The new cars boasted the latest safety feature as well – Westinghouse automatic brakes!  The PRR also began installing “Janey” knuckle couplers with this series, the beginning of the end of the dangerous traditional link & pin coupling system.
