In 1862-3 the Mason Locomotive Works of Taunton, Massachusetts delivered seven engines to the newly organized U.S. Military Railroad in Virginia where the engines were immediately put to work at the hazardous task of supplying the Federal forces.  In August, 1862, Confederate troops under “Stonewall” Jackson captured several locomotives, including Mason’s D.C. McCALLUM, named for the military commander of the USMRR.  The engines were quickly hauled off as loot and leased by the Confederate government to southern railroads.

The Richmond and Danville Railroad, an important link in the southern system, acquired the D.C. McCALLUM and renamed it POCAHONTAS, using it until the end of the war.  The SMR Trains model of the “Pocahontas” engine reflects its heavy use by a resource-starved southern railroad with a greatly simplified decoration scheme based upon that used by other engines of the line (no time or money for fancy custom paint here!).

The following year, Mason received an order from the US Military Railroad for 26 more engines.
These were all intended for the western theater of war and most received only a number rather than a name.
However, one engine that was named was the GENERAL McCALLUM,
named as a replacement for the captured locomotive of 1862.
The new engine was extravagantly decorated to honor the newly-promoted USMRR commander,
featuring a portrait of the General himself on the side of the tender.

SMR’s model of the “General McCallum” is the most elaborate model we have ever produced!
